In Ray Evernham’s ultimate dream, a new generation of International Race of Champions cars and drivers are on track, racing wheel to wheel and at top speeds.
Evernham’s on-the-drawing-board plan would have fans watching some of the world’s best race-car drivers competing in cars that, largely to avoid manufacturer conflicts, would be what Evernham calls “non-denominational.”
The idea remains mostly a goal for the time being, but Evernham and motorsports entrepreneur Rob Kauffman, who now own the IROC brand, are steadily moving toward making it a reality.
IROC, which began in 1973 as a made-for-television series matching international superstar drivers in identically prepared race cars (first Porsches and later NASCAR-style stock cars), has been silent since 2006. Evernham, a former NASCAR championship crew chief and Hall of Fame member, and Kauffman hope to make the IROC brand a standard in the motorsports community again.
While Evernham and Kauffman work toward scheduling “real” racing with IROC-type cars, they have concentrated on placing former IROC vehicles in car shows and on track at vintage racing events. Included in the 2025 schedule is the popular Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion August 13-16 in Salinas, California.
In 2024, Evernham's group celebrated IROC history at a reunion event at Lime Rock.
