IROC brought American racing legends to celebrate America’s 250th birthday in Washington D.C.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (August 31, 2026) – In the days following the Freedom 250 Grand Prix on the streets of Washington, D.C. fans are still talking about the thrill of the inaugural event. While the NTT INDYCAR Series headlined the weekend, it was IROC Presented by Chevrolet that brought the nostalgia with a field of racing icons, adding to the history and spectacle of the Freedom 250 weekend.
Contesting a doubleheader, IROC Presented by Chevrolet brought together some of motorsport’s most recognizable names, as former champions from NASCAR, INDYCAR and Trans Am returned to wheel-to-wheel competition to battle on the streets of the nation’s capital.
“Thinking back on all the races I’ve attended throughout my career, the Freedom 250 Grand Prix was truly something special,” said Ray Evernham, Co-Principal of IROC Holdings, LLC. “Racing through the streets of Washington, D.C., with the U.S. Capitol serving as the backdrop, was an experience unlike any other. The energy from the tens of thousands of fans lining the course was incredible, and seeing some of the biggest names in motorsports competing wheel-to-wheel in IROC Firebirds made for an unforgettable weekend.”

The IROC exhibition during the Freedom 250 Grand Prix weekend put racing legends from all different disciplines head-to-head on the 1.7-mile, seven-turn street course.
With NASCAR Cup Series champions Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, Bobby Labonte, Rusty Wallace and Bill Elliott racing alongside Indianapolis 500 champions Tony Kanaan and Helio Castroneves, as well as Trans Am and Motorsports Hall of Famer, Tommy Kendall, the field read like a who’s who of American motorsport with champions racing champions. During their careers, the star-studded starting lineup accounted for eight NASCAR Cup Series championships, one INDYCAR championship, four Trans Am championships, and 323 race wins—including six Daytona 500s and five Indianapolis 500s.
For many fans, the weekend was like a trip back in time, bringing them together with their racing heroes, and giving them the thrill of cheering on their favorite drivers once again. The distinctive roar of the authentic IROC Pontiac Firebirds—cars originally raced in the series from 1996 through 2006—once again echoed through a major motorsports venue. Most importantly, a new generation of fans got to experience a piece of racing history alongside those who remembered IROC's original era.
“The racing itself was outstanding, and the enthusiasm from the fans exceeded every expectation. It has been a long time since I’ve seen autograph lines stretch as far as they did throughout the weekend, but considering the caliber of drivers we had participating, I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix delivered a truly unique atmosphere, and we were honored to be a part of it,” concluded Evernham.
NASCAR Champion Kurt Busch echoed the sentiment: “I cannot believe the crowd. Not a seat looked empty to me, and that was at 11 a.m. when we were on track. Thank you for the vibe—the energy & the excitement. I think people watching this on TV are going to be like ‘we missed out. We’ve got to be there.’ Just the environment; I loved it.”
“First of all, what an event,” agreed INDYCAR Champion Tony Kanaan. “Ray and the IROC team, INDYCAR, FOX, Penske Entertainment—look at this, look at the fans and look at this view [of the U.S. Capitol]. Obviously, it’s a pleasure to be here; a pleasure to race with my heroes. There’s only a few times in this day and age in my career that I can say I’m racing with people that are older than me, but I’m still getting beat by legends. What a blast. I’m really lucky to be a part of this. Motor racing is my life, and it’s been my life forever. Days like this, that’s when it counts.”
“At the end of the day, this is just so incredible,” added Helio Castroneves, a four-time Indianapolis 500 Champion. “To race with these legends and learn from them still, it’s just mind blowing. I wish that we’d have this series more often so that we can not only race, but also watch, because it is a lot of fun.”
As the checkered flag fell on the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix weekend, one thing was clear—the return of IROC is about more than a nostalgic look back, it provides a show unlike anything else in motorsports.
