CONCORD, N.C. – Former Hendrick Motorsports drivers Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin and Ken Schrader will don driving suits once again to compete in this week's International Race of Champions (IROC) revival race at Ten Tenths Motor Club this Friday as part of the Heritage Invitational.

First started in 1973 by Roger Penske, Les Richter and Mike Phelps, the IROC Series spanned more than 30 years with nationally televised races at tracks throughout North America, including Daytona International Speedway, Watkins Glen International, Cleveland’s Burke Front Airport, Darlington Raceway and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. At its height, the series was popular enough that Chevrolet retailed specially branded and outfitted IROC Camaros to the public, which have now become popular among car collectors.

Unfortunately, it was also very expensive to run – too expensive – leading to the eventual closing of its doors after the October 2006 finale at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Recently, with the popularity of vintage racing, NASCAR Hall of Fame crew chief Ray Evernham and NASCAR team owner, Rob Kauffman, wanted to revive the essence of IROC racing. This new series would feature many of the notable drivers and historic cars that race fans remember.
