The International Race of Champions (IROC) series was a unique and prestigious motorsport competition that ran for several decades, aiming to bring together the best drivers from various racing disciplines to compete in identically-prepared cars at some of the world’s most legendary race tracks.

The IROC series was founded in 1973 by Roger Penske, Les Richter, and Mike Phelps. The idea was to create a championship that featured top drivers from different racing disciplines, such as NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula 1, and sports car racing. The goal was to determine the "champion of champions" by placing competitors in identical race cars.

IROC is remembered as a unique and prestigious series that brought together some of the greatest drivers in motorsport. The concept of identifying the "champion of champions" remains a memorable aspect of racing history.

The Pontiac Firebird IROC was introduced in 1996 and raced through to the series conclusion in 2006. The IROC Firebirds were designed by Laughlin Racing.

In 2006, Tony Stewart was crowned as the final IROC series champion. The versatile star raced this car at the 2006 Daytona IROC race with an eighth-place finish, which contributed to his season-ending championship. Chassis # LRP 4743, which was one of the later IROC Firebirds built, has more magical Daytona history with two back-to-back wins with Ryan Newman in 2004 and Mark Martin in 2005. The 2005 Daytona win for Martin was his 12th IROC race victory, which would move him past legendary drivers Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Al Unser Jr. for the most IROC race wins by a single driver in series history. This was a precursor to another record in 2005; Martin went on to win an unprecedented fifth IROC championship.

Other drivers who piloted this car in competition include Dale Jarrett, Bobby Labonte, Mike Bliss, Buddy Lazier, Jimmie Johnson, Scott Sharp, Steve Kinser and Danny Lasoski. Stewart may very well be the most versatile driver of the last quarter century of auto racing. He’s a throwback in the vein of A.J. Foyt or Mario Andretti, drivers who could win in any car they drove against any group of drivers.

The car is currently in restored condition and eligible at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and other historic race events.
