The International Race of Champions (IROC) series was a unique and prestigious motorsport competition that ran for several decades, aiming to bring together the best drivers from various racing disciplines to compete in identically-prepared cars at some of the world’s most legendary race tracks.

The IROC series was founded in 1973 by Roger Penske, Les Richter, and Mike Phelps. The idea was to create a championship that featured top drivers from different racing disciplines, such as NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula 1, and sports car racing. The goal was to determine the "champion of champions" by placing competitors in identical race cars.

IROC is remembered as a unique and prestigious series that brought together some of the greatest drivers in motorsport. The concept of identifying the "champion of champions" remains a memorable aspect of racing history.

The Pontiac Firebird IROC was introduced in 1996 and raced through to the series conclusion in 2006. The IROC Firebirds were designed by Laughlin Racing.

Chassis # LRP 2566 holds a special place in the history of NASCAR legends Dale Earnhardt Sr. and his son Dale Earnhardt Jr. At the 1999 Michigan International Speedway race the Earnhardts would place first and second, respectively, in the closest margin of victory—0.007 of a second—in the entire history of the IROC series. This is the car that Dale Earnhardt Jr. drove to second place on that special day, which is still regarded as one of the most treasured IROC moments ever. Moreover, this is the same car that Dale Sr. won Talladega behind the wheel of in 1999, solidifying his third IROC series championship.

Other notable achievements of this special car include Mark Martin’s win at the first night race in IROC history at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1997, which contributed to his third IROC championship that same year. Other drivers from 1996-2000 include Jeff Gordon, Scott Pruett, Dale Jarrett, Tony Stewart, Terry Labonte, Bobby Labonte and Alex Zanardi. The car was converted to a two-seater configuration in 2000.

The car is currently in restored condition and eligible at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and other historic race events.
