The International Race of Champions (IROC) series was a unique and prestigious motorsport competition that ran for several decades, aiming to bring together the best drivers from various racing disciplines to compete in identically-prepared cars at some of the world’s most legendary race tracks.
The IROC series was founded in 1973 by Roger Penske, Les Richter, and Mike Phelps. The idea was to create a championship that featured top drivers from different racing disciplines, such as NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula 1, and sports car racing. The goal was to determine the "champion of champions" by placing competitors in identical race cars.
IROC is remembered as a unique and prestigious series that brought together some of the greatest drivers in motorsport. The concept of identifying the "champion of champions" remains a memorable aspect of racing history.
The Pontiac Firebird IROC was introduced in 1996 and raced through to the series conclusion in 2006. The IROC Firebirds were designed by Laughlin Racing.
This Firebird represents the beginning of a new era for IROC, serving as one of the first three prototype chassis constructed by Laughlin Racing for the series. The car played a key role in early Firebird development and testing leading up to the 1996 IROC season.
From 1996 through 1998, the car served as an official IROC practice car and was driven by all competitors participating in the series during that era, including Dale Earnhardt, Robby Gordon, Tommy Kendall, Sterling Marlin, Al Unser Jr., Jeff Gordon, Terry Labonte, Mark Martin, Johnny Benson Jr., Scott Pruett, Steve Kinser, Rusty Wallace, Dale Jarrett, Ricky Rudd, Geoffrey Bodine, Randy LaJoie, Alex Zanardi, Darrell Waltrip, Jimmy Vasser, Bobby Labonte, Jeff Burton, Arie Luyendyk and Tony Stewart.
The car was then used as a show car for the remainder of its tenure at IROC. Upon retirement, LRP 3790 went into the private collection of Roger Penske.
Since being purchased from the Penske Collection in 2025, the car has undergone a thorough mechanical tune up, including new master cylinders, rotors, hats, pads, rebuilt calipers, clutch master cylinder, fuel cell, fire bottle, seat belts, radiator, steering box, rebuilt shocks, rebuilt carburetor, addition of rear bar and arms, changed front bar and springs (4). All other normal maintenance items have been addressed, the valve springs have been checked and the motor has been scoped and leak down checked. Brake cooling has also been added.
This car is currently eligible for all IROC events, including the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and Heritage Invitational.
