The International Race of Champions (IROC) series was a unique and prestigious motorsport competition that ran for several decades, aiming to bring together the best drivers from various racing disciplines to compete in identically-prepared cars at some of the world’s most legendary race tracks.

The IROC series was founded in 1973 by Roger Penske, Les Richter, and Mike Phelps. The idea was to create a championship that featured top drivers from different racing disciplines, such as NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula 1, and sports car racing. The goal was to determine the "champion of champions" by placing competitors in identical race cars.

IROC is remembered as a unique and prestigious series that brought together some of the greatest drivers in motorsport. The concept of identifying the "champion of champions" remains a memorable aspect of racing history.

The Dodge Daytonas were debuted in IROC competition for the 1990 season and were only used for four years. Many of the cars that competed as Daytonas began life as a Gen 3 IROC Camaro in 1984 then were rebodied to Dodge Daytonas for use in the 1990-1993 IROC seasons. Most of the IROC Daytonas were rebodied again after the 1993 season with Dodge Avenger body work. All of the chassis that were campaigned as Avengers would be retired after the 1995 season to make way for the new Laughlin Racing Products chassis sporting Pontiac Firebird bodies.

This aqua colored IROC Dodge Daytona began service in the summer of 1985 as an aqua colored Camaro #18.  The car won two races, 1985 by Harry Gant at Michigan and 1986 Daytona with Al Unser Jr, but it was Gant’s win that will go down as one of the series’ most legendary championship finishes.

Harry Gant entered the final race of the 1985 season at Michigan 12 points behind the championship leader Darrell Waltrip. Gant would go on to win the race and, by doing so, created a tie with Waltrip in the season long points race. The tie break was determined based on who had the highest finishing position in the race and with his victory against Waltrip’s 4th place finish Gant would take the 1985 IROC championship title.  To add to the legend, Harry Gant won the race at Michigan in 1985 in a photo finish over Terry Labonte.

Other notable drivers to get behind the wheel of this car were road racers Klaus Ludwig, Derek Bell, and Tom Gloy and IROC series champions Al Unser Sr, Cale Yarborough, Dale Earnhardt, and Bill Elliott.

After being retired from IROC competition this car remained in Roger Penske’s private collection until early-2025. This is one of very few IROC Dodge Daytona race cars still in existence.

The car is currently representative of Rusty Wallace’s 1991 IROC series championship, is in restored condition and eligible at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and other historic race events.
