The International Race of Champions (IROC) series was a unique and prestigious motorsport competition that ran for several decades, aiming to bring together the best drivers from various racing disciplines to compete in identically-prepared cars at some of the world’s most legendary race tracks.
The IROC series was founded in 1973 by Roger Penske, Les Richter, and Mike Phelps. The idea was to create a championship that featured top drivers from different racing disciplines, such as NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula 1, and sports car racing. The goal was to determine the "champion of champions" by placing competitors in identical race cars.
IROC is remembered as a unique and prestigious series that brought together some of the greatest drivers in motorsport. The concept of identifying the "champion of champions" remains a memorable aspect of racing history.
The Dodge Avengers were debuted in IROC competition for the 1994 season and were only used for two years. Many of the Avengers that competed as Avengers began life as a Gen 3 IROC Camaro in 1984 then would later be rebodied to Dodge Daytonas before receiving their Avenger body work. All of the chassis that were campaigned as Avengers would be retired after the 1995 season to make way for the new Laughlin Racing Products chassis sporting Pontiac Firebird bodies.
Currently bodied as a 1995 Dodge Avenger, this IROC car competed from 1984 through 1995 and was driven by many of the most iconic names in motorsports, including Dale Earnhardt. It carried the Chevrolet banner through the 1989 season before being rebodied and branded as a Dodge Daytona in 1990. In 1994, the chassis was rebodied once more, this time as a Dodge Avenger, and went on to finish its racing career at the end of the 1995 season.
