The International Race of Champions (IROC) series was a unique and prestigious motorsport competition that ran for several decades, aiming to bring together the best drivers from various racing disciplines to compete in identically-prepared cars at some of the world’s most legendary race tracks.
The IROC series was founded in 1973 by Roger Penske, Les Richter, and Mike Phelps. The idea was to create a championship that featured top drivers from different racing disciplines, such as NASCAR, IndyCar, Formula 1, and sports car racing. The goal was to determine the "champion of champions" by placing competitors in identical race cars.
IROC is remembered as a unique and prestigious series that brought together some of the greatest drivers in motorsport. The concept of identifying the "champion of champions" remains a memorable aspect of racing history.
The Dodge Avengers were debuted in IROC competition for the 1994 season and were only used for two years. Many of the Avengers that competed as Avengers began life as a Gen 3 IROC Camaro in 1984 then would later be rebodied to Dodge Daytonas before receiving their Avenger body work. All of the chassis that were campaigned as Avengers would be retired after the 1995 season to make way for the new Laughlin Racing Products chassis sporting Pontiac Firebird bodies.
This car was one of the first Banjo Matthews Gen 3 IROC Camaros built so it spent time as a Gen 3 Camaro, Dodge Daytona and a Dodge Avenger before being retired from IROC competition after the 1995 season. Many of the most iconic names in racing history drove this car, including George Follmer, Emerson Fittipaldi, Dale Earnhardt, Bobby Rahal, Jeff Gordon, Richard Petty, Mark Martin and various others.
While this car spent most of its life as a Blue #2, the current livery pays tribute to the Orange Avenger Dale Earnhardt drove at Darlington and Michigan to win the 1995 IROC championship over Mark Martin by a mere four points.
The car is currently in restored condition and eligible at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and other historic race events.
